Am I feeling sinister?
If You’re Feeling Sinister by Belle and Sebastian
She was into S&M and Bible studies Not everyone's cup of tea, she would admit to me A cup of tea, she would admit to no-one A cup of tea, she would admit to me A cup of tea, she would admit to no-one
Nobody else can sing so sweetly and sadism and masochism, let alone Bible studies. Then the twisting of the cliche "not her cup of tea" so that it's almost a twee physical object she only hands to the narrator.
Stuart Murdoch was always the best lyricist of this ilk of 90s-2000s artists, and they predated the even twee-er acts like Moldy Peaches ( ! ) and She and Him ( :( ). There isn't a Belle and Sebastian album with higher highs or with a more consistent tracklist, and the number of times these simple songs are elevated to have truly stirring moments surprises me even now. Take the end of "Me and the Major," where the harmonica delicately freaks out as the snow is falling, falling, falling. Almost Joycean, no?
"His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead." Sorry, I'll stop with the allusions.
